COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our MSc IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING is an advanced course, which aims to provide students with the education and training required to enable them to take up a leading role in the complex software engineering projects that are currently challenging industry and commerce. The course will enable students to develop computing-related knowledge and understanding, practical discipline skills and a range of transferable skills that will enhance the students personal and professional development.

This is achieved by providing students who already possess a thorough grounding in the principles of computing with knowledge of current best practice in the principles and methods of software engineering, and the opportunity to exercise that knowledge in the context of a project of significant size. In addition, students awareness of the concerns of software reliability, correctness, safety, usability and cost will be developed by the course.

Course Structure

The course is structured around four themes:

  • Formal theme, comprising advanced software development, formal methods, concurrent and distributed systems.
  • Design theme, comprising information engineering, human/computer interaction (design and development)
  • Application theme, comprising AI, computer systems performance modelling, real-time systems.
  • Project theme, comprising software project management, project, dissertation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

NOTE: This course is available for January start.

We would normally require you to possess a good Honours degree (2:2 or above) or an equivalent overseas qualification, in an area relevant to their proposed programme of study and from an approved degree awarding body.

If you have lesser academic qualifications but have substantial (approx. 5 years) relevant work experience, your application may also be considered.

Candidates applying to the course with non-standard qualifications will be judged on an individual basis using the University's APEL procedures.

In addition, if your first language is not English, a test of written and spoken English normally needs to have been passed at grade 6.0 for IELTS (with no subtest below 5.5) or for TOEFL (87 for the Internet-based test).
