COURSE DESCRIPTION

BSc (Hons) Computing: This is a one-year course for students who have completed a Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree or equivalent overseas qualification and want to earn an Honours degree in Computing. The course provides a programme of computer science and related subjects with the flexibility to combine a range of core and optional modules in related fields, including: Networks and the Web, Software Engineering, Information Systems, System Administration and Multimedia Computing. The BSc (Hons) Computing will enable students to develop their knowledge, practical skills and understanding of computer systems from both hardware and systems software perspectives.

Graduates from our top-up courses have gone on to careers in areas such as software development, programming, systems administration, mobile computing, Web development, IT support, IT analysis and teaching.

Note that a candidate's suitability for the degree course and field will be assessed prior to any offer of admission being made to the BSc (hons) Computing. The assessment of pre-requisite knowledge for each of the fields will include the consideration of a full transcript of marks for each candidate to assist in determining whether the candidates previous education and/or experience meets the demands of those modules with formal pre-requisites. If necessary, a candidate also may be asked to produce full syllabus details of each module taken and/or any other additional information that may help inform the consideration of admission.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

BSc (Hons) Computing is available as a one-year course to those who have completed, or expect to complete, an appropriate HND in a computing subject with at least 2 distinctions and 3 merits. Entry is direct to stage 3 of the degree programme. Level of entry is dependent upon performance in, and relevance of, the Higher National qualification or Advanced Diploma undertaken. A relevant Foundation Degree passed with distinction, or the successful completion of three years of a four year undergraduate honours degree programme, may be accepted in lieu of an HND.

Appropriate, relevant equivalent overseas qualifications will also be considered. Candidates whose first language is not English will also be expected to possess a University approved English Language qualification such as IELTS at 6.0 or TOEFL at 550 (paper based test), 220 (computer based test) or 83 (internet test). Alternatively you should posess GCSE English at a minimum of grade C.

In addition, if your first language is not English, a test of written and spoken English normally needs to have been passed at grade 6.0 for IELTS (with no subtest below 5.5) or for TOEFL (87 for the Internet-based test).
